A Main Street with Real History

Boonton grew up around ironworks on the Rockaway River and the Morris Canal in the 1800s, and was incorporated as a town in 1867. Its Main Street is unusual: it is built along a cliff overlooking the river "Hollow," where traces of the old iron industry remain. Today Main Street is lined with Victorian brick and wood storefronts, restaurants, antique shops and a cluster of art galleries known as the Boonton Art District. Landmarks include the Boonton Opera House and the old Boonton National Bank building, and the Boonton Historical Society operates from the John Taylor House at 210 Main Street. The Boonton Historic District, covering streets such as Church, Birch and Cornelia, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Events and Outdoor Space

Residents fill Main Street for events such as the summer car show, when the street closes to traffic, and the December Chocolate Stroll. Grace Lord Park, below Main Street along the river, and Canalside Park offer walking paths and scenic overlooks.

Getting Around

Boonton is one of the best-connected small towns in Morris County. Interstate 287 runs right through town, linking to I-80 and Route 46 within minutes. Boonton station is on NJ Transit's Montclair-Boonton Line, a commuter link that dates to the Lackawanna Railroad's Boonton Branch in 1870.

Boonton Schools

The Boonton Public Schools serve the town through three schools: School Street School (pre-K to 2), John Hill School (grades 3 to 8) and Boonton High School (9 to 12). Boonton High also serves students from Lincoln Park and offers Advanced Placement, honors and dual-credit college courses. Families should confirm current school assignments and programs directly with the district.

Homes in Boonton

Boonton's housing mix ranges from 1800s Victorians and two-family homes near Main Street to mid-century colonials, capes and split-levels on the town's quieter side streets, plus condos and townhomes. Walkability to Main Street and the train is a big draw, and well-kept historic homes near downtown tend to attract strong interest.
