Downtown Denville

Downtown Denville, first developed in the 1930s, is a compact, walkable district of independent shops, restaurants and long-running local favorites such as Denville Seafood, open since 1951. Many people from neighboring towns treat it as their downtown too. The community spirit showed in 2011, when residents and neighbors pitched in to rebuild after Hurricane Irene flooded much of the center of town.

Denville's Lake Communities

Denville has 11 named bodies of water. Its four major lake communities, Indian Lake, Cedar Lake, Rock Ridge and Lake Arrowhead, began about a century ago as summer colonies and are now year-round neighborhoods with membership clubs, beaches and seasonal activities. Indian Lake, for example, has three lifeguarded beaches in summer and is within walking distance of downtown. Most Denville residents live outside the lakes, in neighborhoods such as Bald Hill, Beacon Hill and Union Hill.

History and the Outdoors

Forges and mills went up along the Rockaway River and Den Brook between 1730 and 1760, and Denville village grew around the Job Allen Iron Works. The township was formed from part of Rockaway Township in 1913 and became a summer resort town in the 1920s and 1930s. Tourne County Park, shared with Boonton Township and Mountain Lakes, offers hiking trails just outside the center of town.
