Success!
Mount Arlington is a small Morris County borough of about 5,900 residents on the southeast shore of Lake Hopatcong, New Jersey's largest lake. Of its 2.8 square miles, about 0.66 square miles is water, so lake life is part of everyday living here, from boating and paddling in summer to quiet lake views year-round.
Mount Arlington was incorporated in 1890 from part of Roxbury Township and named for the 1st Earl of Arlington. Around the turn of the 20th century it was a busy summer resort: thousands of visitors arrived each summer by train at Landing Station, then took water taxis across Lake Hopatcong to grand resort hotels, drawn by the famous cooling "Mount Arlington breeze." Today the borough is mainly a year-round residential community, though its lakefront still carries that resort character. Mount Arlington is home to the Lake Hopatcong Yacht Club.
Lake Hopatcong is a major recreation destination for boating, fishing, swimming and lakeside dining in warm months, plus ice fishing in winter. The borough also maintains local parks, trails and recreation programs, and neighboring Hopatcong and Roxbury add more shoreline parks and marinas.
Mount Arlington has direct access to Interstate 80, making it a practical lake town for commuters heading east to Parsippany, Morristown or New York City. NJ Transit rail service is close by for those who prefer the train.
The Mount Arlington School District serves kindergarten through grade 8 in two schools located along the eastern bank of Lake Hopatcong, including Mount Arlington Public School for grades 3 to 8. High school students attend Roxbury High School, a relationship that dates back to 1903, and Mount Arlington appoints a trustee to represent its interests on the Roxbury board of education. Confirm current school assignments with the district.
Mount Arlington's housing includes lakefront homes with docks, lake-view and lake-rights homes on the hills above the water, renovated former summer cottages, single-family neighborhoods and townhome communities near the highway. Lakefront and lake-access homes are limited and can sell quickly, so it pays to have a plan before you start shopping.
