An Iron-Town History You Can Still See

Settlers arrived in the 1720s and 1730s, and by 1760 Rockaway Village was already a center of trade built around a gristmill, sawmill and forge on the Rockaway River. Iron from nearby mines made the town a stronghold of Revolutionary activity. The Morris Canal, completed in 1836, turned Rockaway into a hub of industry and commerce, and the borough was incorporated in 1894 after splitting from Rockaway Township. Many of the commercial buildings along Main Street and the larger homes on Church Street date from the town's 1800s boom, and many borough homes still keep their original architecture. Film fans may recognize downtown: scenes from the 2003 movie The Station Agent were shot on Main Street and along the train tracks.

Parks and Everyday Life

The Rockaway River runs the length of town, and the Parks Lake walking trail is a local favorite. Parks and athletic fields are spread throughout the borough, and Main Street offers everything from casual spots to sit-down dining. The Rockaway Borough Public Library is housed in the historic Joseph Jackson House.
